300,000 dead. More than 2.5 million men.women and children forced from their homes. The conflict in Darfur, Sudan continues, accompanied by some of the worst human rights abuses imaginable, including systematic and widespread rape and the abduction and murder of civilians.
In July 2007, the UN Security Council voted unanimously to deploy peacekeepers to stop the unspeakable violence in Darfur. Now, more than a year later, many UN Member States have failed to deliver on their promises.
They promised to provide enough peacekeepers to stop the violence. Promise broken.
They promised to provide helicopters and other essential equipment. Promise broken.
They promised to protect humanitarian aid workers. Promise broken.
They promised to hold perpetrators accountable for their crime. Promise broken.
As a result, millions of men, women and children remain at extreme risk from deadly violence, and those responsible for that violence remain free.
