Clinton's Cocaine Cover-Up?

A small dirt airstrip at Mena, Arkansas, was a major North American focus for the Contra drug and gun-running network, apparently handling a night-flight every five minutes, without lights, at the height of the activities.

Democrat Congressman for Arkansas, Bill Alexander, has stated that activities at Mena have been responsible for large volumes of drugs coming into his state. In spite of mounting evidence, however, Clinton, as Governor of the state, appears to have made no attempt to help with investigations by local prosecutors into the illegal activities there; he
may even have sat on important evidence which could have helped to bring into the open these activities, as we shall see.

In his defense Clinton has claimed that he did in fact authorise $2 5,000 for an investigation, but no trace of such a payment has yet been found. Clinton's behaviour hasled to suspicion in some quarters that he may even have been linked to the C.I.A. in the past, perhaps receiving their help in obtaining his Rhodes scholarship as has happened with others. One fellow scholar at the time, Lt.Col. Robert Earl, curiously enough went on to become an assistant to Oliver North.

Clinton is well-known too for sending his state's National Guard to Honduras for training in what amounted in effect to
Contra-supporting activities. He has honoured prominent contras, like Adolfo Calero and his brother as well as a notorious American supporter Major-General John Singlaub, with "Arkansas Traveller" awards.

Clinton had also employed, in the Arkansas Development and Finance Administration, a contra-supporter named Larry Nichols, who almost torpedoed his candidacy later by exposing his affair with Gennifer Flowers during a court case
following Nichols' dismissal from his job. Clinton's brother - who has been convicted of cocaine possession - is also involved, as a 'hanger-on' of Barry Seal who was a major organiser of the contra resupply network and
one-time pilot for the Medellin cocaine cartel.

An investigation in the newsletter "Washington Report" concluded that "There is ample evidence that Bush, Clinton, Pryor (Senator David Pryor, Democrat-Arkansas), Bumpers (Senator Dale Bumpers D-AR), Hammerschmidt, various U.S. attorneys, Arkansas state officials and Arkansas financial institutions knew plenty about the illegal activities at Mena but permitted these to  proceed.

In his first media interview since taking over as US ambassador this month, Louis Susman, a fundraiser for President Barack Obama’s campaign, insisted that the US wanted to ditch the image America has in Britain as being a “dumb” and “bullying” power, and to reach out to communities across the UK, including Muslim groups.

Mr Susman said he wanted British impressions of the US to improve after the Bush years. “We are not a dumb power, we are not a bullying power,” he said. “We want to build partnerships, we want to listen, we want to consult, we want to co-operate, and that’s what I want to do. American Utopias

From the point of view of most Hollywood filmmaking, these utopian strategies are used to mirror the hegemonic structures found in society. Instead of imagining an alternate space as a resistance to dominant society, these films place USA as the utopian space. Such an argument follows what Jean Baudrillard provocatively argues in his book America: the US is utopia achieved and because of this, there are no poor people in USA. ”The have-nots will be condemned to oblivion, to abandonment, to disappearance pure and simple. […] And rightly so, since they show such bad taste as to deviate from general consensus.” (Baudrillard 111). Baudrillard’s argument must of course be understood as ironic, and as pointing to the ideological erasure of the poor, rather than a serious argument of no poverty in America.

Consider Gattaca (Andrew Niccol 1997) which portrays the struggle of Vincent who tries to become an astronaut despite being considered an in-valid, due to his faulty genes. Diagnosed with a life expectancy of no more than 30 years, Vincent goes on to prove the system wrong by living longer and becoming an astronaut in spite of the immediate rejection. However, this does not result in the film portraying the system as problematic, but simply presenting Vincent as a heroic figure. Society is not challenged, as Vincent is praised. Here, the film rejects sympathizing with the in-valids and by extension those that the in-valid symbolically represent: poor people and people of color. The film’s conclusion is the individual’s victory over the system, not the collapse or change of society. The individual succeeds in spite of the society, but this also indicates that anyone may succeed, despite the conditions they are born. Matters of race and class – folded into the image of the in-valids – are rejected as arguments for one’s situation. The geneticism Vincent faces can still be conquered, if you work hard enough: no social divide is so large that it cannot be overcome. While this may seem as a positive thing, it is also reactionary view which denies the need for change, since “the talented will overcome”.

In late March on his Sunday radio/television program (Alo Presidente), he voiced the same concern in calling Obama an "ignoramus" and suggested "he should read and study a little to understand reality....the obstacle to development in Latin America has been the empire (he) preside(s) over today."

THE NEW AGE POPULATION SELECTION PROCESS

As part of the imminent global transformation, the radical New Age leaders look forward to a "selection" among the human race. The elect of humanity will survive to enter the New Age. Many others will die - a prospect that these gurus view with cold equanimity. (Thus, it's reasonable to wonder whether those who foretell a "selection process" intend to kill their opponents, if they can.)

For several decades Barbara Marx Hubbard has predicted "personal extinction" for people who will not get with the New Age program: "A Quantum Transformation is the time of selection.... The species known as self-centered humanity will become extinct. The species known as whole-centered humanity will evolve." At this time, "humans capable of cooperating to self-transcend will do so"; "elements" who maintain "the illusion of separation will become extinct...just as Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal humans became extinct." In referring to undesirable people as "elements," she follows the example of the Nazis, the Communists, and others who dehumanize their opponents to justify destroying them. Hubbard warns that if the selection comes, it will be violent: "Either the good will prevail...or the violent selection of the self-centered will begin." For her, Satan is "part of the selection process...that will bring forth the self-elected from the self-rejected, so that...only those connected to the whole survive." Muller agrees that persons "who hold contrary beliefs" to those favored in the "next phase of evolution" will disappear; opponents of the UN and other "anti-evolutionary, blind, self-serving people" will have their souls "parked in a special corral of the universe for having been retarding forces, true aberrations in the evolution and ascent of humanity," a banishment to a spiritual Siberia.

The leaders of the New Age movement argue that the earth is overpopulated, and that radical measures are needed to defuse the "population bomb." In the 1940s - when world population was less than half what it is today - Bailey said, "certain physical restrictions should be imposed, because it is now evident that beyond a certain point the planet cannot support humanity." Ex-Catholic Matthew Fox has said, "Excessive human population is a grave danger...it's one of the reasons I joined the Episcopal Church, because of its open-minded and pragmatic view of birth control." In 1997 Gorbachev said, "for a certain transitional period families should limit themselves to one child."

Some of these compassionate people want to reduce Earth's population to two billion or less. In a November 1991 interview with The UNESCO Courier, Jacques-Yves Cousteau said: "World population must be stabilized and to do that we must eliminate 350,000 people per day." That works out to 127,750,000 people per year, and 1.27 billion people to "eliminate" per decade. The eco-feminist theologian Rosemary Radford Ruether told those who attended a May 1998 ecological conference that "We need to seek the most compassionate way of weeding out people.... In place of the pro-life movement we need to develop the 'spirituality of recycling'...a spirituality that includes ourselves in the renewal of earth and self. We need to compost ourselves." Several months later Ruether told a national conference of Call to Action, a dissident Catholic organization, how many people must go onto the compost pile: "We must return to the population level of 1930" - about two billion people. What is discreetly unannounced is what to do with the 4 billion "surplus" people. Once again, the liberal death wish rears its head.

The problem with arguments like the one about fitting the whole world's population inside an utopian suburb the size of the state of Texas is that it ignores the political reality of the world.

That may be true, however, in making his point, the author is simply attempting to expose the lie (more precisely the lie of "blaming the victims" - standard in the corporate fascist business model) that land distribution issues and hunger are a top-down intentional socio-political failure and NOT due to scarcity of food resources or land or overpopulation.

If the planet needs more human2.0 clones - whether they be corporate label clones or eco/freemarket clones/ or eco-socialist/anarchist clones is another issue entirely.

I do think, however, that most humans do (unconsciously) realize that their "genetic heritage" has been hijacked by the corporate state and subsequently internalize that unspeakable horror by continued participation in a system that is quite obviously at this point intentionally subverting their ability to co-exist and survive on this planet. THEY are doing this in order to test some transhumanist/social darwinist project THEY already KNOW is hardwired for failure.

I have wondered quite often recently if THEY have found human sustaining life on another planet and are therefore turning this one into a machine worker colony? If this admittedly perhaps far-fetched speculation is indeed true, then The RISE OF THE MACHINES (T3) is no longer the realm of science fiction or even metaphor.

Apparently not content with a talk show, a monthly glossy and, well, mega-stardom, Oprah Winfrey has also penetrated the human brain. When people see her picture or hear her name, specialised "Oprah neurons" fire away, new research suggests.

Other public figures shouldn't be jealous. Our heads are also flush with cells attuned to Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, and even Saddam Hussein.

The study of epileptic patients with electrodes implanted in their brains isn't an investigation of our celebrity-obsessed culture. Rather, the research explains how distinct images and sounds of a person can trigger a general concept of them, says Rodrigo Quian Quiroga, a neuroscientist at the University of Leicester, UK.

Four years ago, Quian Quiroga's team made headlines when it reported the existence of neurons that fire at the sight of different pictures Jennifer Aniston, or in some cases her name spelled out on a computer screen.

To determine if these cells respond to visual cues only, or to information from other senses as well, Quian Quiroga and his colleagues added sound to their tests.

"If I said 'Oprah', the way this information is processed is completely different than if I showed you the name 'Oprah' [as text]," he says.

The researchers worked with seven patients with epilepsy that was untreatable drugs and who had electrodes implanted in their brains in order to hunt down the cells responsible for their seizures. Pinpointing the source of the disturbances allows surgeons to remove the area responsible and leave healthy parts intact. "If they go through surgery, the outcome is pretty good. In most cases they get cured without any major deficit," Quian Quiroga says.

Yet "Oprah neuron" might be a misnomer. The same neuron also fired, albeit much more weakly, to Whoopi Goldberg in one patient. Similarly, Luke Skywalker neurons also responded to Yoda, and those famous Jennifer Aniston neurons flashed to her former Friends co-star Lisa Kudrow. Such connections could explain how our brain relates two abstract concepts, Quian Quiroga says.

To make sure Dallaire's damning cables remained hidden, he relied on his trusted deputy, Kofi Annan, who was then head of UN peacekeeping operations. If there is room for Boutros-Ghali and his French friends on Bagosora's block, there should also be room for Annan.

No international gathering these days is complete without Bill Clinton, and by some standards he too could qualify for a cell on Bagosora's block. During the 100 days of genocide in Rwanda, Clinton never even convened a meeting to discuss it because he knew that the facts were so awful that if he confronted them, he would be compelled to act. Later he said he had not known what was happening in Rwanda. General Dallaire called him a liar, and Philippe Galliard, who ran Red Cross operations in Rwanda during the genocide, agreed. "Everybody knew, every day, live, what was happening," he said after Clinton's whopper.

Just as Boutros-Ghali had an ambitious underling who was salivating for the big job, and who knew that demanding action to stop genocide in Rwanda would ruin his chances, so did Clinton. His was Madeleine Albright. As America's ambassador to the UN, she worked tirelessly to assure that the peacekeeping force was kept too small and toothless to stop the killing. Later she helped block a plan to send UN police to disarm the hundreds of thousands of Rwandan genocidaires who had fled to camps in eastern Congo – a piece of work that helped create today's Congolese hell.

Justice works slowly, and none more slowly than the international kind. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda has spent more than a billion dollars since its creation in 1995, but has completed only 40 cases. All the defendants have been Rwandans, as undoubtedly will be all those convicted in the future. The tribunal's motto is "never again". A better one would from an old Bob Dylan song: The executioner's face is always well hidden.

The White House chef doesn't usually change with administrations. And sure enough, Mrs. Obama announced yesterday that the family would keep on Cristeta Comerford, who became the first woman to hold the position when Laura Bush hired her in 2005.

"Cristeta Comerford brings such incredible talent to the White House operation and came very highly regarded from the Bush family," the incoming first lady said in a statement. "Also the mom of a young daughter, I appreciated our shared perspective on the importance of healthy eating and healthy families. I look forward to working with her in the years to come."

The decision was anticlimactic, if not disappointing, for some food lovers who had cast Barack Obama as the next American food hero. While George W. Bush is renowned for his love of cheeseburgers, Obama understands the pain of high-priced arugula at Whole Foods. He not only favored Bayless's restaurants, but he also was a regular at upscale Spiaggia and South Side institution Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop, famous for its corn cakes. Here was a man who could bring organic and sustainable food to the political table. ad_icon

But no one is expressing dismay, at least not publicly. Waters, who had offered herself up as head of a "kitchen cabinet" to help vet potential chef candidates, said it was a "great relief" that the Obamas didn't choose a celebrity. "I think that overshadows the idea that good food is a right, not a privilege," she said. "I want someone there who cares deeply about this and understands the importance of real food."

And what the American people care about I suspect are the same thing that the British people care about, and that is, are you putting people back to work? Are businesses growing again? Is business -- is credit flowing again? And, you know -- and that's just true with respect to this summit. But when it comes to our Afghanistan policy, the question is going to be, have we made ourselves safer; have we reduced the risks and incidents of terrorism?

And so the proof of the pudding is in the eating. But hopefully, I think at least we've set a tone internationally where people don't -- where they give us the benefit of the doubt. They're still going to have their interests, and we're going to have ours. There are going to be tough negotiations, and sometimes we're going to have to walk away from those negotiations if we can't arrive at a common accord. There are going to be real dangers that can't always be talked through and have to be addressed. But at least we can start with the notion that we're prepared to listen and to work cooperatively with countries around the world.

As debate grows about a possible second stimulus package for the flagging American economy, at least one legendary investor is giving the idea his guarded approval.

The "Oracle of Omaha" believes a second stimulus may be called for.

"I think that a second one may well be called for," Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, told "Good Morning America" today. But, he added, "you hope it doesn't get watered down in many ways."

Buffett cautioned that a second stimulus package, like the first, won't be "a panacea," because stimulus packages take time to work. He criticized lawmakers' work on the first stimulus package, which contained $787 billion in spending.

"Our first stimulus bill ... was sort of like taking half a tablet of Viagra and having also a bunch of candy mixed in ... as if everybody was putting in enough for their own constituents," he said. "It doesn't have really quite the wall that might have been anticipated there."

President-elect Barack Obama's newly appointed chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, served on the board of directors of the federal mortgage firm Freddie Mac at a time when scandal was brewing at the troubled agency and the board failed to spot "red flags," according to government reports reviewed by ABCNews.com.

According to a complaint later filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, Freddie Mac, known formally as the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, misreported profits by billions of dollars in order to deceive investors between the years 2000 and 2002.

Emanuel was not named in the SEC complaint (click here to read) but the entire board was later accused by the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) (click here to read) of having "failed in its duty to follow up on matters brought to its attention."

In a statement to ABCNews.com, a spokesperson said Emanuel served on the board for "13 months-a relatively short period of time."

The spokesperson said that while on the board, Emanuel "believed that Freddie Mac needed to address concerns raised by Congressional critics."

Freddie Mac agreed to pay a $50 million penalty in 2007 to settle the SEC complaint and four top executives of the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation were charged with negligent conduct and, like the company, agreed to settle the case without admitting or denying the allegations.

The actions by Freddie Mac are cited by some economists as the beginning of the country's economic meltdown.

The federal government this year was forced to take over Freddie Mac and a sister federal mortgage agency, Fannie Mae, pledging at least $200 billion in public funds.

Freddie Mac records have been subpoenaed by the Justice Department as part of its investigation of the suspect accounting procedures.

Emanuel was named to the Freddie Mac board by President Bill Clinton in 2000 and resigned his position when he ran for Congress in May, 2001.

Freddie Mac Misrepresented Income, Says SEC

During the years 2000, 2001 and 2002, according to the SEC, Freddie Mac substantially misrepresented its income to "present investors with the image of a company that would continue to generate predictable and growing earnings."

The role of the 18-member board of directors, including Emanuel, was not addressed in the SEC's public action but was heavily criticized by the oversight group (OFHEO) in 2003.

The oversight report said the board had been apprised of the suspect accounting tactics but "failed to make reasonable inquiries of management."

The report also said board members appointed by the President, such as Emanuel, serve terms that are far too short "for them to play a meaningful role on the Board."

As a Congressman, Emanuel recused himself from any votes dealing with Freddie Mac until just this year.

In dealing with the nation's economic crisis, the new White House chief of staff will almost certainly be involved in discussions about the house and mortgage markets.

Emanuel's spokesperson said, "As White House chief of staff he will work with President-elect Obama and his economic advisers to help ensure we protect taxpayers and homeowners."
